End of April - September
In the lotus pond at the back of the garden, white, red and cream color flowers bloom. Their long duration of blooming lasts until fall.

Hitsuji Plant, Nymphaeaceae
Nymphea tetragona

Although it is named for blooming around the time of Hitsuji (2pm), its flowers actually bloom at an earlier time.
On the end of a thin long stem from its root, a 5cm diameter, white flower blooms.

Kousa Dogwood, Cornaceae
Cornus kousa

Late May -
This plant gets its Japanese name (Yamaboushi) from the white petal-like shape called bract that resembles the hood of a monk soldier from Mt. Hiei.

Hotaru-bukuro (Campanula punctata Lam.), Campanulaceae
Campanula punctata Lam.

June - July
With a flower that resembles a hanging lantern, this plant is also called " Chochin-bana" in Japanese, which means " Lantern Flower." It is probably named after " Hotaru-bukuro," which means " firefly bag" in Japanese.

Hydrangea, Hydrangeaceae
Hydrangea macrophylla

June - July
As its alternate name, " seven changes" suggests, the color of its flowers changes according to the soil condition.
At the back of the nature trail, white flowers and light blue flowers bloom.

Dokudami (Houttuynia cordata), Saururaceae
Houttuynia cordata

Mid June
Although the image of this plant is often considered a weed, on the floor of the cedar forest the white pedal-like racemes beautifully expand. Cedar forests feel cool even in the summer.

Silk Tree, Mimosa, Fabaceae
Albizia julibrissin

Late June - Late July
In Japanese, this tree is called " Nemunoki" (sleeping tree) because its small leaves close and hang during the night. The pale crimson filament is often compared to the appearance of a beautiful woman. The blooming period is long and produces a sweet scent.

Chinese bellflower, Campanulaceae
Platycodon grandiflorum

Late June - Early August
It is often thought that this flower blooms in autumn; however, its dark, transparent and bright flowers bloom during July and August near the entrance of the museum and along the bank of the nature trail. The wild species blooms during September and October. It is one of the seven autumn flowers.

Oga Lotus, Nymphaeaceae
Nelumbo nucifera

Late June - Early August
This is a 2000-year-old lotus that a botanist, Dr. Oga found in a peat bed in Hanamigawaku-Ku, Chiba in 1951.

Goldband Lily, Liliaceae
Lilium auratum

Mid July
This is a specialty lily of Japan that adds color to the forests with its large white flowers. It attracts people with its strong scent. It naturally grew before the opening of the museum and was protected with special care.

Crape Myrtle, Lythraceae
Lagerstroemia indica

Late July - Late August
The Japanese name of this tree, " Sarusuberi" (sliding monkeys) gets its name from its smooth branches and trunk which would cause a monkey to slide down. It has a long period of blooming and its name is also written in Chinese characters as " hundred days of red." In the garden, we have crimson, white, purple and peach color flower varieties.

Confederate Rose, Malvaceae
Hibiscus mutabilis f.versicolor

Mid August - September
Pure white flowers bloom in the morning and gradually turn pink and then red in the evening. This flower is compared to the way a beautiful lady gradually becomes red in her face as she drinks alcohol.
