Outline
Man Ray (1890–1976) was an artist who was active in the US and Paris in the twentieth century. He produced a broad range of works including paintings, photographs, objects, and films. This exhibition focuses on the objects he referred to as “objects of my affection” from the latter part of his career. As a Jewish American who adored Paris, despite struggling with the language barrier and being at the mercy of the world wars, Man Ray lived through repeated encounters and separations with numerous artists and beloveds. The objects he made freely throughout his lifetime are realized as poetical combinations of things and words. Particularly notable is the point that he reproduced objects treating the same theme in a method of his own, through which he presented his view of the major issue of “the originality of an artwork.” In this exhibition, with approximately fifty objects from collections in Japan as the pivot, adding related works and materials, altogether 150 or so works are introduced.
